Course Description: This is an introductory course in modern physics, which specializes in electromagnetic science and engineering, as well as atomic, molecular, optical, nuclear, and particle physics

Course Objective: The objective of this course is to teach the importance of the nature and propagation of light, geometric optics and optical instruments, interference, diffraction, relativity, photons electrons and atoms, the wave nature of particles, quantum mechanics, atomic structure, molecules and condensed matter, nuclear physics, particle physics and cosmology

Learning Outcomes: The students are expected to learn relevant topics in modern physics, such as atomic, molecular, optical, nuclear, and particle physics, how to setup experiments, how to record reliable data analyze their measurements, discuss their results and present their written laboratory reports in an intelligible way.

Teaching Method:  There are two weekly online or in person meetings. There is a laboratory session every other week. There is a problem session every week.

Grading policy: Two midterm exams (25 % each), one final exam (25%), and laboratory reports (25%). The dates of the exams will be announced later. Makeup exams are very reluctantly given only with a university approved medical excuse, and if given, will always be harder than the original exams. Do not plan to take makeup exams. You will submit a final laboratory report for each laboratory experiment.

Attendance: All students are required to attend lectures, labor sessions, and problem sessions. Even a university approved medical excused absence or Dean of Student’s excused absence does not relieve you of this attendance requirement.

Labor Session: Come to the labor session on time. You may not enter the labor session, if you are more than 15 minutes late. If you miss a laboratory experiment without an official excuse, your grade will be zero for that experiment. Come to the labor session prepared. You should be familiar with the experiment, before you come to the labor session. Complete the necessary preliminary work, before you come to the labor session.

Problem Session: Come to the problem session on time. You may not enter the problem session, if you are more than 15 minutes late. Come to the problem session prepared. You should be familiar with the topic, before you come to the problem session. Complete the necessary reading, before you come to the problem session

Laboratory NoteBook: is available at the bookstore. Every student should have one square ruled A4 size laboratory notebook. Bring your laboratory notebook to all the laboratory sessions. Students without a laboratory notebook will not be admitted to the laboratory. You will record with a pen (not a pencil) the schematics, the relevant parameters, and your measurements in your laboratory notebook. After the conclusion of the experiment, before you leave the laboratory, the used pages will be dated and signed by you and the laboratory assistant.

Student Code of Conduct: Students should be familiar with the Koç University Student Code of Conduct.
